New Research Project

11.12.2013

Chair of Logistics and Quantitative Methods is Part of new EU-funded Project PRACTICE (Privacy-Preserving Computation in the Cloud)

The traditional computing paradigm is experiencing a fundamental shift: organizations do not completely control their own data any longer, but instead hand it to external untrusted parties – cloud service providers – for processing and storage. There currently exist no satisfactory approaches to protect data during computation from cloud providers and from other users of the cloud. PRACTICE has therefore assembled key experts throughout Europe who will work towards providing privacy and confidentiality for computations in the cloud.

PRACTICE will create a secure cloud framework that allows for the realization of advanced and practical cryptographic technologies providing sophisticated security and privacy guarantees for all parties in cloud-computing scenarios.

Our team at the University of Würzburg will contribute to the PRACTICE project with its extensive experience and expertise in the field of (Secure) Supply Chain Collaboration. Cloud-based collaborative planning in the supply chain offers huge opportunities for improving coordination across different supply chain partners (buyers, suppliers, intermediaries) and for increasing supply chain efficiency and service levels. In today’s business world, however, these potential improvements are often not realized because convincing concepts for cloud-based supply chain collaboration are not yet available, and companies are oftentimes concerned that sensitive data may be leaked and used to their disadvantage. Our work within the scope of PRACTICE aims to remedy these issues.

The PRACTICE project has officially started on 1st November 2013 with a set duration of 36 months. It has received funding from the European Union’s Seventh Framework Programme (FP7/2007-2013) under grant agreement n° 609611. The PRACTICE consortium consists of 18 partners from ten countries and includes well known collaborators from industry, such as SAP AG, Intel and Arcelik and academic partners like TU Eindhoven, TU Darmstadt and University of Milan.
