During the last four years, our researchers at the Chair of Logistics and Supply Chain Management have successfully developed new and innovative approaches to integrate AI/Machine Learning methods and optimization to improve decision making in operations and logistics management. A number of new solutions in inventory/capacity management and sales force scheduling have been created with companies such as Lufthansa Technik Logistik, DAW and va-Q-tec AG and have shown to lead to excellent planning results.

Motivated by their extensive experience, the outstanding performance of their approaches, and an increasing demand in practice, two of our researchers – Jan Meller and Fabian Taigel –  co-founded Level3, a company dedicated to applying AI in Operations & Logistics Management. The founding team includes Dr. Sarah Mehringer, an experienced data scientist and is complemented by academic mentors (Prof. Christoph M. Flath and Prof. Richard Pibernik) and mentors from industry (Daniel Weber, Member of the Board of DAW, and Dr. Harald Kolbe, Head of Innovation at Lufthansa Technik Logistik).

Recently, the team secured an EXIST Business Start-up Grant from the Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs and Energy, a nationwide program set up to fund early-stage start-ups from universities and other research institutes. The program provides funding for the development of an innovative idea to a marketable product/service and is granted only to start-ups with a sound business plan and good market potential.

Level3 is finalist of the Logistics & Mobility Start-up Award 2019 and will present their solutions on stage at StartupCon / DIGITAL X on October 30th, 2019 in Cologne.
