Collaboration with University of Michigan

The research initiative “Procurement of Essential Medicines”, that was recently launched, addresses optimal procurement decisions of global health organizations such as UNFPA or USAID. Researchers at the Chair of Logistics and Quantitative Methods develop models and mechanisms and conduct analyses to support strategic procurement decisions for essential medicines and contraceptives.

The research is carried out in collaboration with Prof. Prashant Yadav and his group at the William Davidson Institute (University of Michigan) (more).  Prashant Yadav is a leading expert in the field of global health and pharmaceutical supply chains. He has dedicated more than 10 years of his work to improving the delivery of essential medicines to low income countries and conducted dozens of projects in this area. In the last two years he and his colleagues have started working on upstream market issues faced by global health organizations. Within a project funded by UNITAID  Yadav’s research group investigates market interventions to ensure supply stability, reduced prices and improved quality for active pharmaceutical ingredients for malaria, tuberculosis and HIV/AIDS medications (more).  In another project funded by the Gates Foundation they investigate market dynamics to set up healthy markets for a variety of products and organizations (more).

The researchers at University of Michigan and University of Wuerzburg are joining forces to bring together Yadav and his group’s knowledge in the field of Global Health markets and supply chains with the long standing experience in for-profit sector procurement of Pibernik and Rothkopf at the Chair of Logistics and Quantitative Methods.
