Best Paper Award for Prof. Bofinger and Thomas Haas

The paper "CBDC: Can central banks succeed in the marketplace for digital monies?" by Professor Peter Bofinger and Thomas Haas was selected as best paper in a joint call for papers by CEPS (Centre for European Policy Studies), ECRI (European Credit Research Institute) and ECMI (European Capital Markets Institute).

The announcement and awarding of the 10,000€ prize took place during a webinar on December 9th, 2021. In addition to the presentation of the paper, it was also discussed in a panel. The panel included Joachim Schwerin (Principal Economist, DG GROW, European Commission), Anca Bogdana Rusu (Head of Strategy, Celo), Maria Teresa Chimienti (Senior Payment System Specialist, World Bank), Paul Worthington (Public Policy Manager for Europe, Novi), Karel Lannoo (CEO of CEPS and General Manager, ECMI) and Apostolos Thomadakis (Researcher at ECMI and CEPS).

In their paper, Prof. Bofinger and Thomas Haas discuss the possibility of introducing central bank digital currencies (CBDC) for households and non-banks. The paper can be downloaded here.
